ENCATC announces the winner of the 2024 ENCATC Research Award on Cultural Policy and Cultural Management

Lecce, Italy, 19 September 2024 – Dr. João Oswaldo Leiva Filho was announced as the winner of the 2024 ENCATC Research Award on Cultural Policy and Management.

ENCATC, the leading European Network on cultural management and policy, is thrilled to announce the winner of the prestigious 2024 edition of the ENCATC Research Award. This annual award recognises outstanding research contributions in the field of cultural management and policy.

After a rigorous evaluation process by a distinguished jury of international experts, the winning research project, “Fifty Years Measuring Cultural Engagement: Contributions, Gaps and the Future of Survey”, was selected for its innovative contribution to understanding cultural engagement, its impact on public policy, and the role of cultural practices across diverse societies.

The recipient of the 2024 ENCATC Research Award, revealed at the annual ENCATC Research Award Ceremony held in Lecce, Italy, on the evening of 19 September, in the frame of the 2024 ENCATC Congress, is João Oswaldo Leiva Filho. A Brazilian researcher and cultural entrepreneur, he holds a degree in Economics and a Master’s in Cinema from USP, as well as a Master’s in Cultural Management from UOC in Spain. He completed his PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2024. Leiva has worked as a journalist for major Brazilian newspapers and in communications for São Paulo’s Secretariat of Culture. He leads JLeiva Cultura & Esporte, a consultancy focused on cultural research in Brazil, including studies on theater, independent music, and cultural engagement.

The winner will have his work published in the form of a book inside the ENCATC Advances in Cultural Management and Policy, published by Routledge, the world’s leading academic publisher in the Humanities, Social Sciences and STEM.

The winning research project’s contributions are vital for the future of cultural studies and public policy-making. João touches on the historical impact of CAPS within an evolving framework. He highlights the evolving methodological challenges from measuring traditional arts to even capturing digital and everyday activities. Joao also calls for greater collaboration between quantitative and qualitative researchers as he promotes efforts to bridge the gaps between research, public policy, and cultural diversity which will have lasting effects on how culture is studied and supported globally” said Gerald Lidstone, President of the Jury of the Award.

Moved by this recognition, João Oswaldo Leiva Filho, expressed: “I’m very proud to receive this important prize in the field of cultural management and policy. ENCATC has been stimulating various kinds of research on culture, and I’m honored to join the prestigious group of researchers who have won this recognition. It was also a pleasure to be a finalist alongside Jordi Sanjuán Belda, who conducted an amazing research study on culture and well-being, something we need to explore more in the future. I hope that through this award I can contribute to the stimulation of data collection on culture in Brazil and beyond.”

Dr. Jordi Sanjuán Belda

Alongside the 2024 winner, the other finalist Jordi Sanjuán Belda (University of Valencia), was also highly commended for his valuable contributions to cultural management and policy research. His outstanding work on the PhD thesis, “Cultural and Creative Industries and the Well-being of Regions”, earned him the opportunity to publish an article in the esteemed European Journal of Cultural Management and Policy, further highlighting his impact in the field.
